(CBS/AP) DAMASCUS, Syria - Two strong explosions barbour jackets ripped through the Syrian capital Thursday, killing or wounding dozens of people and leaving scenes of carnage in the streets in an assault against a center of government power.

Syrian state television put the death toll at 40, with another 170 wounded. The precise count could not be immediately confirmed, but Baghdadi says there were dozens of bodies visible after the blasts.

Baghdadi says the explosions appear to have targeted the so-called Palestine intelligence branch, and an aviation headquarters.

Believed to be in his early 30s, Yemen-based Asiri barbour became an urgent priority for Western counter-terrorism officials following his alleged role in planning strikes on the United States in 2009 and 2010, plots that included the failed bombing of an airliner over Detroit on Christmas Day in 2009.
Asiri, who survived a U.S. drone missile attack last year, has drawn scrutiny for his skill at fashioning bombs using a hard-to-detect powdery substance called pentaerythritol tetranitrate, or PETN, and hiding them in clothing or equipment.

Washington (CNN) -- The latest foiled bomb plot targeting an airliner is an indication that, while the device did not ultimately pose a threat, terrorists remain determined, U.S. Secretary of State Hilary Clinton said Tuesday.
"These terrorists keep trying ... to devise more perverse barbour jacketsand terrible ways to kill innocent people, and it's a reminder as to why we have to remain vigilant at home and abroad in protecting our nation and in protecting friendly nations," she told reporters at a news conference in New Delhi.

Cairo (CNN) -- One person died and more thanbarbour jackets 300 were injured Friday when clashes broke out in Cairo as protests against the country's military government turned violent, state media reported.
Video from the scene showed some protesters throwing rocks at security forces, and the security forces spraying water cannons at the demonstrators, who were protesting near the country's Defense Ministry.
The protests erupted amid a backdrop of frustration about the pace of reform since Hosni Mubarak was ousted as president last year and over concernbarbour that Egypt's military leadership is delaying the transition to civilian rule.
One person was killed and 373 were injured in the clashes in the Abbasiya area, said Ahmed Ansari, director of Cairo's emergency medical services.
Egypt's ruling Supreme Council of the Armed Forces said a curfew will be enforced in Abbasiya Square and streets leading to it from 11 p.m. to 7 a.m.

WASHINGTON ¡ª If there¡¯s one thing Republicans and Democrats in Washington say they agree on, it¡¯s the need to reduce federal spending. And it¡¯s something they almost never do, as recent events have proved again.
